On-Campus Job Options

  • Work Study - To apply to these on-campus jobs in BengalLink, you must meet certain financial requirements. Go to the Financial Aid Office (Moot Hall 230) to determine your eligibility.
  • Student Assistant - Departments hire students for non-work-study positions. Go to the departments you are interested in working for and inquire if they are hiring student assistants. Some student assistant positions may also be found in BengalLink.

These on-campus departments traditionally hire a large number of students:

Other on-campus departments also hire students, but may not advertise. Contact on-campus departments and inquire if they have student assistant openings.

Off-Campus Job Options

  • Search part-time jobs on BengalLink
  • Check employer websites for job postings and, if available, their social media pages.
  • Many employers do not post jobs online; they wait for students to contact them. Call, visit or email a resume and cover letter to employers you may be interested in.
  • Let friends, family and acquaintances know that you are looking for a job. They may know of a job or refer you to someone who may be hiring.
  • Job Fairs - The Part-Time Job & Internship Fair is a causal, fun event that's held at the beginning of the fall semester. Employers are looking to hire students for part-time jobs on and off-campus.

Applying for Jobs

  • Follow application instructions listed in the job posting. Does it require a cover letter, resume or an application? Fill out all application materials completely! Employers will be looking to see how well you follow directions.
  • Create a resume. See samples in this handout and/or attend a CAPE Resume Writing Workshop.
  • Have your resume and/or cover letter reviewed by a CAPE counselor.
  • Remember to follow up all applications, resumes and possible leads via phone, email, or perhaps visiting the organization. Be assertive: just because you have not heard from an employer does not mean they are not interested.

The Interview

  • Interviews may be conducted via phone, video conferencing (ex. Skype), or in person.
  • Attend a CAPE Interview Workshop, schedule a mock interview or visit the website to learn how to interview professionally.
  • Be able to sell your skills and experience. Give examples of how you used your skills to benefit your previous employer(s). Show, don’t tell!
  • Dress appropriately for an in-person or Skype interview, even for part-time jobs!
  • Write a thank you letter within 24 hours of the interview, even if the interview was short or over the telephone.

Research shows students who work 15-20 hours per week have higher GPAs than students who do not work while attending college.
